A lively musical intelligence and exceptional refinement of expression could be considered the professional trademarks of Italian-Swiss pianist Francesco Piemontesi. After studying with Arie Vardi in Hannover, he gained further inspiration and mentoring from Murray Perahia, Cecile Ousset, Alexis Weissenberg, and especially Alfred Brendel. He first achieved international attention by winning third place at the 2007 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels. That was followed in 2009 by a Borletto-Buitoni Trust Fellowship and participation in the BBC's highly-selective New Generation Artist scheme from 2009-11. In 2012 he was named Best Newcomer at the BBC Music Magazine Awards. Piemontesi has worked with many leading orchestras and conductors, and has played in such prominent venues as London's Wigmore Hall, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall in New York, Berlin's Philharmonie, Zurich's Tonhalle, and Vienna's Konzerthaus and Musikverein. Underscoring his reputation as an elite interpreter of the classical repertoire is his ongoing three-season, complete Mozart sonata cycle at Wigmore Hall. His most recent recordings include three for Naive Classique: Debussy Complete Preludes, Mozart Piano Works, and Schumann and Dvorak Piano Concertos with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Jiri Belohlavek. Piemontesi also serves as Artistic Director of the Settimane Musicali di Ascona, a 71-year old musical festival in Switzerland's Lake Maggiore region.
"...a pianist of natural poise and grace...and of the ability to remind us what beautiful playing means: cantabile playing that is colourful, luminous and harmonious, without in the least lacking tension and atmosphere."
- Alfred Brendel
